Kansas City, MO
The Kansas City Area Transportation Authority is the owner of an approximately seven-mile rail corridor which was once a trolley line. This rail corridor traverses many residential areas, as well as two distinct business districts (Brookside and Waldo).
In late 1994, Landplan Engineering was selected to provide Design Development services for the recreation trail through the corridor. Working with the Country Club Right-of-Way Advisory Committee, a Technical Committee, and several neighborhood associations, Landplan developed schematic design alternatives for the trail. These included trail routing, surfacing, width, ornamentation, and landscaping.
Landplan was next contracted to provide surveying and construction documentation services for the two-mile Phase I portion of the trail (55th to 75th Streets). Coordination regarding the removal of existing tracks and ties, and crossing of public rights-of-way, as well as with neighborhood associations and adjoining business and property owners were facilitated by Landplan. Design features include a ten-foot wide, limestone screening trail surface, entrance and access control monumentation in character with the surrounding neighborhoods, and design and signage features to accommodate a wide variety of users. Construction of Phase I was completed in July 1997.
Construction of the 3/4-mile Phase II from 49th to 52nd Streets was completed in early 2000 and construction of Phase III (75th Street to 85th Street and Holmes) was completed in late 2000.
