Bridges for pedestrians and bikes require structural, foundation/abutment, and aesthetic considerations. Increasingly bike and jogging trails diverge from roadway right-of-ways to provide recreation in a more natural setting. Bridges must safely accommodate a wide variety of crossings: walkers, runners, bikes, strollers, and roller bladers to mention a few. Many are placed where handicap access/ADA requirements when included as design parameter, particularly as to maximum slopes, provide challenges. Due to this isolation, bridges must be as maintenance free as possible and often must accommodate maintenance and emergency vehicle loads, albeit in limited use.
Landplan Engineering provides design and observation for both custom and manufactured pedestrian/recreation path bridges. The firm works closely with major bridge manufacturers, both steel and wood, and has developed standardized specification and bidding packages to cost effectively promote competitively priced bridges, which may be placed with ease.
Due to the firm’s work with parks and recreation departments, Landplan has developed a number of techniques for bridging along recreational trails that minimizes the impact of the bridge construction process. The intent is to provide the feel of a long established crossing just weeks after placement. Minimizing disruption of nature is just one of the value engineering steps that Landplan brings to aesthetically and physically enhance the value of our clients' projects, both private and public.
