Landplan Engineering,
leading a diverse team of planners, architects and engineers, provided
multi-disciplinary facility assessment, needs analysis, planning and
design services for this National Park Service island compound. Services
included condition assessment and building code compliance review for 17
structures. This intensive building and site survey was complemented by
a site analysis reviewing existing trails, vehicular access, water
supply system, electric generating system, sewage treatment and
collection system, natural vegetation, on-site recreation space, lake
access for recreational boating, views of scenery (Lake Superior,
forest, moose, etc.) and building location relationships to other
functions (administrative offices, maintenance shops, housing and
recreation).
The primary goals established by the National Park Service included: 1)
improvement within budgetary resources: 2) minimize natural vegetation
removal; 3) preserve image of this designated Wilderness and
International Biosphere Preserve; 4) provide significant upgrade in
staff housing; 5) provide a plan that changes compound image from
“logging camp to a balanced community”; and 6) provide views from the
forest to Lake Superior. These goals were adopted prior to the NPS’
endorsement of nationwide design for sustainability policy.
