MEMORIAL
DRIVE
University of Kansas,
Lawrence, KS |
Landplan Engineering
was retained in September 2001 by the University of Kansas to transform
the existing Memorial Drive corridor into a signature
vehicular/pedestrian setting on campus. Memorial Drive had initially
been planned in 1950 as a ceremonial parkway to the World War II
Memorial Campanile and Bell Tower.
To attain the goal of creating an appropriate memorial setting, Landplan
was responsible for concept development, streetscape master planning,
and civil engineering design for this major redevelopment project.
Notable challenges in this approximately 1/2-mile project include
extreme slopes, unstable soils, shortage of parking, complex underground
utilities, and extensive retaining wall design.
When complete, Memorial Drive will include a continuous ceremonial
walkway linking the western and eastern portions of the main campus,
providing scenic views of historic Potter Lake, the Campanile, Memorial
Stadium and Marvin Grove. Memorial Drive, with its walks, seating areas
and additional memorial features will become a focal location for Kansas
University campus life and major activities.
