MALOTT
PLAZA AND MEMORIAL PLAZA
University of Kansas,
Lawrence, KS |
This project was
conceived as a memorial to Eleanor S. Malott, wife of Kansas University
Chancellor Deane W. Malott, in recognition of her work in campus
beautification and commitment to the University of Kansas.
As an extension of an existing plan, Landplan Engineering, in
conjunction with the Kansas University Department of Design and
Construction Management, developed a final Master Plan for the Memorial
Plaza area. Adjacent to the renovated Budig Hall (Hoch Auditorium),
Malott Plaza embraces an existing overlook and is designed to enhance
the overlook experience.
The memorial garden is viewed from the plaza and overlook area, with a
memorial plaque as a focal point of the plaza itself. Using Native stone
paving and veneers, the plaza treatment is contrasted by the plant
material of the memorial garden, chosen to provide Spring and Fall
color. The views and vistas from the overlook area are framed and
terminated by new and existing flowering crab apple trees, which were a
favorite of Mrs. Malott.
