The City of Shawnee,
Kansas purchased 34 acres of land, including the historic Garrett House,
in 1999. In 2002, the City retained Landplan Engineering to develop a
master plan and site improvement plans, and provide construction
observation for this park on the west side of the City.
The goal of the master plan developed by Landplan is to increase the
overall use of the park property by providing opportunities for both
active and passive uses. Park elements include:
- A one-mile
multi-use recreational trail, with four footbridges and five
trailheads, that meanders along a natural creek bank.
- A shelter and a
small play structure will be located on the east end of the park. A
second, larger shelter designed to abstractly resemble a former
Garrett Farmstead barn will be located in the central portion of the
park.
- A multi-purpose
practice field is located along the south side of 47th Street. This
field provides a green space buffer between the street and the
Garrett House. A softball practice field is also provided.
- A restroom
facility is located at the central portion of the park to provide
good access to all activities within the park.
- Two parking
lots are provided in the park.
The exterior of the
Garrett House was restored and ornamental lighting is used throughout
the Park to further enhance the historic atmosphere of the park.
