Landplan Engineering
was retained in the spring of 2002 to assist the City in attaining its
goals of improving the visual appearance of its downtown commercial
district and creating a place where both citizens and visitors feel
welcome. A key project element was retaining the existing brick street,
which helps tie the downtown to the community’s history. In addition,
the streetscape design needed to respond to the uniqueness of the City’s
Swedish-American history and provide for the needs of the various
festivals and events held in the downtown corridor.
The streetscape concepts recommended by Landplan include sidewalk
replacement, new street lighting, including some light poles that carry
“Maypole” banners, new curbs, and the addition of street trees and other
landscape elements. Opportunities for outdoor murals, the display of art
competition benches, and pedestals for three-dimensional artwork have
been identified. A Mora Clock, a Swedish tradition, takes a central role
at its location on the corner of Main and Lincoln Streets.
