Clear Creek Trail West
Shawnee, Kansas
Landplan Engineering was retained by the City of Shawnee in 2004 to prepare concept alternatives and develop a Master Plan and subsequent design for a 1-mile bicycle and pedestrian trail system between Gamblin Park and Shawnee Golf Course and Country Club. Issues identified during master planning of the trail system and addressed design include:
- Easement or right-of-way acquisition from DeSoto School District to connect between Gamblin Park and subject property.
- Coordination with utility companies (i.e., Johnson County Wastewater, Westar Energy).
- Placement of a footbridge and related geotechnical investigation and environmental inventory.
- Importance of placing the trail system to minimize impacts to environmental characteristics (i.e., existing vegetation, areas with steep slopes, floodplain/floodway).
- Bank stabilization along the north bank of Clear Creek under bridges along Kansas Highway 7.
- In order to place the bicycle and pedestrian trail between the north bank of Clear Creek and bridge slopes, a retaining wall system was designed.
- The Mill Creek Watershed Study (floodway elevations) and City restrictions do not allow low water crossings, making it economically or aesthetically unfeasible to cross Clear Creek.
Other trail system amenities include native stone trailhead monuments, recessed lighting in the retaining walls under the bridges, prairie restoration, and benches.
