Basehor Community Library

Basehor, Kansas

The City of Basehor’s new 13,000-square foot library features a children’s library, meeting room, drive-thru book drop-off window, and private study rooms. The facility and its site have been designed to accommodate future additions to the east and west of the main adult library wing as well as expanded parking facilities.

Landplan Engineering was retained by the project’s architect, GLPM Architects, to provide site development planning and site civil engineering. Landplan also completed preliminary and final site development plans, and drafted utility easements. In coordination with the Architect and Library, Landplan assisted in the acquisition of additional property to prevent the Library from having to replat the project site.

To increase the sustainability of the project, the on-site stormwater management design included the use of bio-swales as a water quality enhancement feature. Bio-swales are incorporated into the design of the parking lot to help reduce the parking lot run-off, increase the water quality of the run-off, and serve as a potential interactive learning area for education about native plantings and water quality. All landscape plantings are native species, which have fewer long-term irrigation needs. The site features an on-site detention pond with 7:1 and 6:1 slopes along three sides to create an easily maintainable pond that can be mowed and can serve as a small amphitheater.
